Jimi Hendrix was stationed at Ft. Campbell, which is technically in Kentucky, but we just say is in Clarksville.

“After his Army discharge, Hendrix and Army friend Billy Cox moved to nearby Clarksville, Tennessee, and undertook in earnest to earn a living with their band.”

I also heard he got his first real guitar at our local music store, that still exists, but I have no idea if that is true or not, I bet he did get a guitar there if he lived here for any period of time, but prob not his first one, maybe his first one after the army I don’t know, okay.

I MEAN COME ON, NOTHING COOL HAPPENS HERE WHILE I’M ALIVE.

If I was alive during that time omg.

Was it Mary’s? That’s where I got my first guitar.

yes ma’am, it certainly was!

That’s amazing! I love that store. It was such a bummer when they were flooded just recently and I was so happy when they came back. I was like, man, that’s the only decent store around for miles! Don’t leave me! lol

Ok this is a little bit outside of the city, but it’s still in the same county.

ELECT ME FOR YOUR GOVERNOR 2010:

I’LL OPEN THE DOOR FOR TENNESSEE FOOD RETAILORS TO ALLOW THERE PRODUCTS IN MORE SUPERMAKET.

Did you ever go to the local grocier and see all the products on their’s shelves? Why should their’s shelves be closed to small business? If you go to other markets like tires stores, drug stores, super stores, jewlery stores, clothing stores, etc. Not one of these stores charges a fee to sell a product to them. Why should food market be allow too? I would introduce legislation to do away with this practice. With all of Tennessee being developed and taken over by large company and all the mom and pop stores are just about gone there no place for Tennessee small business involved in selling retail food and merchandise to sell their’s goods without putting up their’s life saving or to borrow lots of money, the small business can’t compete.

My legislation will not allow any extored products in this state and if it continue they would be fined.

Dude, I can’t make fun of the South anymore because the locals are good enough at it, themselves!

Kind of a Nashville Story

Above:  A pick I borrowed from Nick a long long time ago.

A few years ago, when I was still in school, I found myself without a band and really itching to play and write new music. After a few days posting on Craigslist, I linked up with a couple of guitarists from MTSU: Paul Delmotte and Nick James. At the time, Dan (our original drummer) and I were living in a big house on Belmont Boulevard in Nashville, and we would all practice together in the basement.

The floorbeams down there were just 5 feet or so from the concrete floor, so we’d all have to pick our spots carefully, standing between the supports, and be careful not to move too far or get too wild or we’d start banging our foreheads against the beams. It was a bit funny, but it was cheap, and it worked out.

We cranked out some great riffs and jammed with a few singers, including Kenneth Nixon, who went on to found Framing Hanley. But school soon got the best of us and we parted ways.

Last Tuesday night I ran into Nick at the Rutledge here in town. His new band Throwing Gravity was playing a release party in celebration of their new single. I brought the pick from the picture above, which I’d borrowed stolen from him back when we used to play together, and we spent a while catching up. Throwing Gravity is also on our label and we’ve worked with many of the same industry people along the way. He was always a gifted writer so it’s great to see him getting the recognition we knew he deserved.

That little project from the cramped basement on Belmont Boulevard tied the three of us together for just a moment in time, and now we’ve all come a long way with our own separate groups.

Stories like this are actually pretty common in a town like Nashville. There’s something special about this city.
